Pilot randomized controlled trial of Chinese herbal treatment for HIV-associated symptoms

Article Abstract:

The first controlled trial of Chinese herbs in the treatment of HIV infection found that patients taking an oral preparation containing 31 Chinese herbs reported a reduction in symptoms and an improvement in their overall quality of life compared to those taking a placebo. However, none of the improvements were statistically significant. The study included only 30 patients and ended after 12 weeks. They also had moderate infection and none had developed AIDS. Longer studies covering more patients may show some effect. No patient experienced any toxic reaction from the herbs.

Human herpesvirus 8 oral shedding in HIV-infected men with and without Kaposi Sarcoma

Article Abstract:

The issues about the human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) shedding in oral epithelial mucosal cells in a cohort of HIV-infected men in relation to sexual preference, immunocompetence, Kaposi Sarcoma lesions, and survival is addressed. Human herpesvirus 8 could be present in oral epithelial cells and in shed independent of the patient's immune status, showing that oral HHV-8 shedding might occur at any time in HHV-8-seropositive individuals.
