Blood pressure measurement in pregnant women in the left lateral recumbent position

Article Abstract:

Averaging the blood pressures of both arms may yield an accurate measurement when blood pressure is taken from a pregnant woman who is lying down on her left side. Researchers evaluated the blood pressures of 169 women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy while in different positions. The actual blood pressure for women lying on their left sides was found to be the average of the mean arterial pressure of both arms. Correct blood pressure measurements may be necessary to determine if a pregnant woman needs antihypertensive treatment.

Comparison of auscultatory and oscillometric automated blood pressure monitors in the setting of preeclampsia

Article Abstract:

Neither the QuietTrak nor the SpaceLabs blood pressure monitors should be used in pregnant women with preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy. In a study of 36 women with preeclampsia, both monitors underestimated blood pressure readings.

Cervical incompetence: elective, emergent, or urgent cerclage

Article Abstract:

Women at risk of premature labor may benefit from cervical cerclage. A cerclage is a ring that is placed around the cervix to keep it closed. It can even be placed in an emergency, as demonstrated in a study of 88 pregnant women.
