Body blow

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom government restriction of public pay increases to 1.5% has angered nurses and threatened the future of the Pay Review Body. Nursing staff representatives have rejected the award claiming government intervention has undermined the Pay Review Body's independence. Many fear government restrictions will also limit wage negotiation in 1994. National Health Service Trusts have already limited the power of the Pay Review Body. Nurses may consider it not worth having if it cannot act independently.

Ups and downs of equal pay

Article Abstract:

A UK government review is to examine the issue of pay in the UK National Health Service. Analysts expect this investigation to focus on establishing an equal pay structure. They anticipate that this result would have a positive effect on recruitment to some professions, including nursing. An equal pay structure would relate the pay of nurses to that of doctors who currently earn much higher salaries. Doctors on the lowest grade currently earn a similar salary to the highest-paid nurses.

Running to stand still

Article Abstract:

Low grade nurses working in the UK National Health Service are being deliberately held back from improving themselves through promotion and qualifications, according to nursing unions, who are demanding higher pay rises. Nursing staff are often overworked, under incredible stress and yet are paid very little compared to nurses just a few rungs up the registration ladder. E grade nurse are being left behind in the government's pay review rounds.
