Body mass index, waist/hip ratio, and coronary heart disease incidence in African Americans and Whites

Article Abstract:

Researchers analyzed information from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study to study the amount and distribution of body fat with incident of coronary heart disease in whites and African-Americans. Their findings suggest that relative risks for African-Americans were similar to those for whites. In addition, it showed that African-Americans, much like whites, are not spared from the coronary heart disease caused by obesity.

Systolic blood pressure trends in US adults between 1960 and 1980

Article Abstract:

Between 1960 and 1980 in the US systolic blood pressure trends in adults reflect progress in control of hypertension. Prevalent drug therapy makes direct estimation of the component based on primary prevention impossible. BLood pressure trends in those aged more than 44 years, the trends seem to be attributable to medication for the most part. For those 35-44 years old, progress seems to be attributable to primary prevention.

Ethnic disparities in patient recall of physician recommendations of diagnostic and treatment procedures for coronary disease

Article Abstract:

Patient recall research reveals that African Americans at risk for coronary disease may not be receiving sufficient diagnostic and treatment procedures. In studies asking African American and Caucasian patients to recall procedures recommended by their physicians, fewer procedures were recalled by African Americans than by their Caucasian counterparts.
