Brave new world

Article Abstract:

Health Secretary, Frank Dobson, has pledged extra money and training to overcome the recruitment crisis in nursing. However, the drop-out rates on nursing courses vary from 5-40% so merely recruiting extra students does not solve the problem. There is also a shortage of clinical placements for students and staff who are already being overworked cannot devote much time to students on placement. Students who get poor supervision are much more likely to drop out. It may be more valuable to reduce the number of hours spent on clinical experience but ensuring they are properly supervised.

Recording what you learn from

Article Abstract:

Nurses may include the learning experiences resulting from reading professional articles in their professional profiles. They will find it helpful to follow, or devise their own, guidelines for the reporting of the learning experience. Information they might incorporate into their report includes expected learning outcomes, actual information learnt, intended application of knowledge, and application outcomes. The nurse will need to record the amount of time spent on the learning activity.
