Article Abstract:

The 1992 NT/3M National Nursing Award for education has been awarded to midwife, Jennifer Kelsall for improving services to deaf pregnant women. Research into the experiences of 100 deaf mothers established basic problems of communication. Conventional ante-natal and education services were inadequate. Established literature was ineffective due to poor literacy skills. Research and deaf awareness education revealed the need for individual care. The team has produced an information package with recommendations for good practice.

Article Abstract:

Surrey University's International Centre for Nursing Ethics has presented the first Human Rights and Nursing Awards to Christine Schmitz, Glenda Wildschut and Karla Schefter. Wildschut was the only nurse to serve on South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, while Schmitz has worked in 15 countries for Medecins Sans Frontieres and Schefter has been working in Afghanistan since 1989.

The results of the Nursing Times' modern nursing writing competition are presented. First prize was won by community nurse Susan Potter for her account of the care of a terminally ill man. Several entries are included.
