Breathing easier

Article Abstract:

The findings of research presented to the European Respiratory Society conference in Barcelona, Spain, in Sep. 1995, indicate that nurse-led discharge planning could reduce hospital readmission rates for asthma patients. One UK survey showed that 1/3 of patients who presented with asthma at 100 A&E departments in a September period had been admitted to hospital within the previous 12 months. A study by Philippa Madge, asthma nurse facilitator in the Dept. of Child Health at Yorkhill NHS Trust, Glasgow, Scotland, showed that readmission rates for children were more than halved by nurse-led discharge planning.

A sensitive issue

Article Abstract:

The British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology ENT Sub-Committee has developed a set of guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of rhinitis. Rhinitis is claimed to affect one in every six people and symptoms can be very similar to those of a bad cold. Children suffering from rhinitis can have disturbed sleep and underperform at school. The condition can be treated with topical corticosteroid nasal sprays, and the avoidance of allergens.

A hard Pill to swallow

Article Abstract:

The UK government warning about the possible health hazards of certain oral contraceptives, issued in autumn 1995, has led to a rise in unplanned pregnancies and abortions. Many women stopped taking their oral contraceptive, even though the warning stated that they should not do so. The scare of oral contraceptives has also reduced overall confidence in hormonal contraception.
