Sex and the single mother

Article Abstract:

Nurses are outraged by former Welsh Secretary John Redwood's suggestion that welfare benefit handouts could be reduced if young single teenage mothers had their babies adopted. Redwood argues that family assistance and adoption should be the initial sources of assistance and that state benefit should only be relied upon as a last resort. The number of teenage pregnancies is in decline anyway because of sex education initiatives, claim nurses, with the Government accused of pure rhetoric speaking. Only around 3,600 babies are born to girls aged under 16 in the United Kingdom each year.

Ancient and modern ways

Article Abstract:

Psychiatric nurses in Kwamashu, South Africa, have teamed up with churches to improve the quality of psychiatric nursing. Mentally ill people often turn to churches for 'spiritual healing' instead of visiting a nurse. However, psychiatric nurses need to help spiritual healers to counsel the mentally ill, says Flo Mdladla, regional head of psychiatric community services.
