Budget compromise on track?

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Assn (AMA) and its members are unsure of how issues that affect them directly will be handled during ongoing talks between the Clinton administration and Congress about balancing the budget and reshaping Medicare by 2002. Such issues include antitrust protections for the healthcare industry, as well as tort reforms. Meanwhile, AMA leaders say that they will work closely with Senate and House GOP leaders to ensure that the interests of organized medicine are not compromised.

AMA to feds: ERISA shouldn't protect against negligence

Article Abstract:

Beneficiaries are barred from suing benefit plans for medical negligence damages by provisions in the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). Preferred provider organizations and HMOS have used ERISA as adefense, and liability has fallen on doctors and hospitals as a result. However, activism by the courts, the American Medical Assn and the Dept of Labor are changing this.
