Diet composition and body mass index in pre-school children

Article Abstract:

There is no relationship between diet composition and body size as measured by body mass index (BMI) in this study of 1,444 children aged 1 1/2 to 4 1/2 years old. The height and weight of the preschoolers were used to determine their BMI while the percentage of total energy intake was calculated through dietary intake. This finding, however, may not apply to older children. Energy intake and levels of physical activity may be more influential to size, BMI and body composition.

Sleeping metabolic rate and body size in 12-week-old infants

Article Abstract:

Results of a study on the sleeping metabolic rate (SMR) in 12-week-old infants showed that the SMR was adjusted for the body weight by raising it to the power 0.41 and for fat-free mass by raising it to the power 0.44. Regression analysis was used to minimize the effect of body size and body composition on SMR. The body size should be raised to the power 0.41 to 0.45 to remove its effect on energy expenditure. Previous studies in this field are also discussed.

The effect of diet and sex on sleeping metabolic rate in 12-week-old infants

Article Abstract:

A comparison of the sleeping metabolic rates (SMR) by sex and between breast-fed and formula-fed infants showed that the effect of sex was greater than that of diet. Male infants had a greater fat-free mass (FFM) than female infants. The SMR for male infants was 386 plus/minus 31 kcal/d and was 341 plus/minus 31 kcal/d for female infants. The FFM content of formula-fed infants was slightly more than breast-fed infants.
