Tongue-tied computers

Article Abstract:

English alphabetic characters, having formed the first words printed by computer printers, are no longer sufficient for international applications. Computer codes and English characters defined in a 7-bit 128-code ASCII standard are the basis of the technology. The number of characters available is actually 256 on modern computers, which adds 128 slots for other languages such as German, Russian, Greek or Hebrew. Unfortunately a 256-character system is not adequate for alphabets that require more characters than there are computer keys to use for them. Japanese, Chinese and Korean use approximately 10,000 characters. Unicode is a step taken by computer manufacturers to address international computing. With Unicode the number of bits used to define a unique character is doubled, resulting in a set of 65,000 2-byte characters.
