Dyslexia

Article Abstract:

Experts disagree on the causes and definition of dyslexia, which is an impairment in the ability to read, spell and write words despite the ability to see and recognize letters. The learning disorder is three times more likely to affect males than females. Dyslexic children can suffer from poor coordination, poor spatial reasoning, difficulties determining left from right, poor color naming and poor visual naming. Not all dyslexics have all the symptoms, and many nondyslexics do have some symptoms. Prognosis is better when the diagnosis is made before third grade. The only proven therapy so far is special education, which claims a success rate of up to 96 percent. Teaching methods include: Orton, where the child reads a word or letter out loud while tracing it with a finger; and Fernald, where children choose words to learn and then are taught to generalize about unknown words based on the patterns in the words they know. There is substantive information about dyslexia available to physicians and parents.

Michel Foucault believed that the 20th century would be defined as a Deleuzean epoch in philosophy based on the significance of Gilles Deleuze's philosophies but never clarified what made the philosophies epochal. The philosophical concept espoused by Deleuze that is most likely to have epochal influence is that only a politics created of collective subjectivities and based on absolute singularities can succeed in removing monstrous rulers from power.
