Clinical ladders: can we afford them?

Article Abstract:

Clinical ladder programs are expensive but can be made beneficial by requiring ladder nurses to perform studies that will improve a hospital's efficiency. Nurses on the clinical ladder at a hospital in North Carolina were required to submit a financial case study whose data can be used to demonstrate ways for the patient and the hospital to lower costs. This system improves clinical nursing skills and balances the cost of the clinical ladder.

Does certification mean better performance?

Article Abstract:

A study of nursing certification shows some differences between certified and noncertified nurses and rated job performances. When rated by actual staff, no differences in job competence were found. However, ratings by supervisors gave higher marks to certified nurses. Also, certified nurses show better self-esteem scores than uncertified nurses.
