CMA notes cracks appearing in Canadian system

Article Abstract:

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA), which represents 80% of Canada's physicians, is calling for a free-market system to offset funding cuts in the country's 'medicare' plan. As originally conceived, the plan calls for the provinces and the federal government to split healthcare costs 50-50. Today, the provinces assume 2/3 of the costs, which have risen dramatically. The CMA blames the increase on government intransigence, citing the refusal of British Columbia to negotiate physician fee schedules, a centerpiece of the system.

Make individual decisions on the individual's level

Article Abstract:

Government has become increasingly involved in individual patient treatment decisions such as the length of hospital stays, screening test decisions, and other decisions that concern individuals, but not society. Third-party payers have forced legislators into these actions by their interference with individual health care decision makers. A more appropriate intercession by government would prohibit the third-party payer interference that has caused government intervention.

What's in a drug name? Time, money, lots of market tests

Article Abstract:

Developing brand names for pharmaceutical preparations is a highly sophisticated business. Branding is used to convey an appealing or strong product image to consumers. For example, the letters V, X and Z are thought to attract customers by presenting a contemporary image. Branding companies charge between $50,000 and $150,000 to develop each brand name.
