Can nurses halt primary care shake-up plans?

Article Abstract:

Controversial government plans for a shake-up in primary care trusts (PCTs) by merging them and reducing their provider role to a minimum results in stiff opposition from the nursing community since this would mean encouragement of more independent providers, leaving community nurses facing a surplus of different employers. The opposition has resulted in the slowing down of the pace of the reform and nurses feel confident of being consulted in matters of local healthcare provision.

Outrage over PCT reform proposals

Article Abstract:

Outrage over plans for community nurses to be employed by the independent sector rather than the NHS has permeated every level of the profession since the Department of Health announced the plan in August 2005. The fear is that the move will result in a plethora of new employers in primary care leading to variations in pay and conditions for 70,000 community nurses.

Fears over GP revalidation role

Article Abstract:

Government's revalidation proposal which allows a general practitioner (GP) decide whether their nurses' skills are up to date is being challenged by practice nurses and family doctors. Practice nurses say this would see GPs who know little about nursing skills passing judgment on them.
