Carcinogen risk assessment guidelines and children

The authors discuss the need for the creation of carcinogen risk assessment guidelines specific to children. The difference between infant and child versus adult developmental stages, susceptibility to radiation exposure, care of children exposed to carcinogens, and the EPA's commitment to child health protection standards are evaluated.

Methylmercury neurotoxicity in Amazonian children downstream from gold mining

Article Abstract:

The use of methylmercury in capturing gold particles as amalgam for informal gold mining in the Amazon Basin has been shown to create significant health problems for children downstream of such operations. Declines in visuospatial performance, motor function, and attention are associated with increased methylmercury exposure.

Daily intake of copper from drinking water among young children in Sweden

Article Abstract:

Swedish researchers discover that some children have an above average intake of copper due to contamination of drinking water. The deterioration of old water-pipe systems is identified as a possible reason for drinking water contamination.
