Research has shown some links between genetic and environmental factors for obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis. The hormone leptin influences weight gain, industrialization has helped create rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis can be affected by diet, smoking, and use of corticosteroids.

President Bill Clinton signed an executive order on Feb 3, 1999, to combat the introduction of nonindigenous microbial, animal and plant species. Such invasions cost the US approximately $123 bil a year in ecosystem damage.
