Cardiac procedures, outcomes, and accountability

Article Abstract:

More research is needed to determine whether cardiac procedures done after a heart attack improve quality of life. These procedures include angiography, angioplasty and bypass surgery. A 1997 study found that even though US physicians performed these procedures five to seven times more often than Canadian physicians, one-year mortality rates were identical. However, studies have shown that Canadian heart attack patients have more episodes of angina and other symptoms compared to US heart attack patients.

Optimal treatment of acute coronary syndromes -- an evolving strategy

Article Abstract:

Patients with unstable angina or a heart attack who have a high risk of death should be treated aggressively with anticoagulants and procedures to re-open blocked arteries. These procedures include angioplasty, coronary artery bypass, and stents, which are small cylindrical devices placed inside arteries.

Anemia, transfusion, and mortality

Article Abstract:

Elderly patients who have had a heart attack should receive a blood transfusion if their hematocrit falls below 33%. This is a sign of anemia, and a study published in 2001 showed that blood transfusions for anemia reduced the mortality rate in elderly heart attack patients.
