Care patterns in Medicare and their implications for pay for performance

Article Abstract:

A study analyzed claims in order to describe typical care delivery patterns in fee-for-service Medicare, to evaluate the extent to which a beneficiary's care could be assigned to a single physician or practice, and to determine the extent to which physicians can be held accountable for Medicare patients. Results demonstrated that the dispersion of patients' care among multiple physicians limits the effectiveness of pay-for-performance initiatives that rely on a single retrospective method of assigning responsibility for patient care.

Doctors on strike-The crisis in German health care delivery

Article Abstract:

The physicians at Germany's university clinics went on strike in mid-March 2006, to protest an increase in the hours of the official workweek that came without a corresponding increase in pay. After 3 months of collective action and negotiation, employers consented to pay increases of 8 to 18%, far less than sought while the union was also able to secure bonus payments for physicians who have earned more advanced medical qualifications.

Primary care physicians who treat blacks and whites

Article Abstract:

The hypothesis that differences between primary care physicians who treat black patients and those who treat white patients play a role in health care disparities is evaluated. The physicians treating black patients may be less well trained clinically and may have less access to important clinical resources than physicians treating white patients.
