Where they stand: health issues take a supporting - but possibly pivotal - role

Article Abstract:

Health issues are resurfacing in debates between presidential incumbent Bill Clinton and Republican candidate Bob Dole. Both platforms pledge to protect Medicaid and Medicare and strengthen quality in the health care system. Tobacco control and substance abuse are two major public health issues of the 1996 elections. Clinton and Dole remain diametrically opposed on the issue of abortion.
