Caribbean challenge

Article Abstract:

People with learning difficulties are often regarded as a burden to society in Jamaica so many physically and mentally disabled children are abandoned. There is little state funding to provide services for such people and the existing projects often rely on fundraising and international donations. Professionals in the field of learning disabilities rely heavily on overseas aid workers who sometimes have little knowledge or specialist skills.

Expecting a choice

Article Abstract:

Expectant parents are rarely fully informed when they are choosing the future of their unborn baby who has learning difficulties. Many people believe that the British medical profession has a negative attitude towards people with Down's syndrome and other similar conditions. Nurses should discuss the rewarding aspects of parenting a child with learning disabilities, as well as the set-backs, so that a balanced view is provided.
