Carotid artery atheromas in post-menopausal women: their prevalence on panoramic radiographs and their relationship to atherogenic risk factors

Article Abstract:

Carotid artery disease may be visible on a dental X-ray of the mouth. Atherosclerosis in the carotid arteries is believed to be a risk factor for stroke. In a study of 52 asymptomatic postmenopausal women, 31% had visible carotid artery disease on the dental X-ray. Many also had other risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Detection of radiation-accelerated atherosclerosis of the carotid artery by panoramic radiography: a new opportunity for dentist

Article Abstract:

The panoramic radiography, which is used to detect accelerate form of atherosclerosis (atheromas) in the cervical portion of the carotid artery is discussed. Detecting carotid artery atheromas is necessary as it leads to the risk of developing stroke.

Ultrasonographic confirmation of carotid artery atheromas diagnosed via panoramic radiography

Article Abstract:

The role of dentists in referring patients with atheromalike lesions to physicians for further diagnosis is explored. Panoramic radiographs showing calcified atheromas in internal carotid artery in dental patients over 50 years age underwent Doppler ultrasonography (DUS) to confirm the diagnosis. DUS results confirmed diagnosis for 23 percent of patients discovered to have atheromas through radiography.
