Catheter-based treatment of aortic dissection

Article Abstract:

More research is needed to determine if the use of endovascular stents is effective in treating aortic dissection. Aortic dissection occurs when the aorta splits open, usually because of an aneurysm. This is a medical emergency and is usually treated surgically. However, surgical treatment is not always effective and has a high mortality rate. Two 1999 studies showed that endovascular stents may be effective in treating this condition. During this procedure, a small cylindrical device called a stent is placed on a catheter and threaded through a leg artery up to the aorta. The stent seals the opening.

A randomized comparison of off-pump and on-pump multivessel coronary-artery bypass surgery

Article Abstract:

Off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery has benefits and adverse effects, according to a study of 50 patients. Normally, patients who have a coronary bypass operation are placed on a heart-lung machine and then their heart is stopped so the surgeons can work easily. Off-pump means this is not done and the surgeon must work on a beating heart. In this study, off-pump surgery was safe and less damaging to the heart, but the bypass arteries were less likely to be fully functional.

Patency and the pump--the risks and benefits of off-pump CABG

Article Abstract:

Some patients who need a coronary artery bypass operation can be operated on without a heart-lung machine, particularly if they have other diseases that may complicate their outcome. Normally, a heart-lung machine is used so surgeons can stop the heart. During off-pump bypass surgery, this is not done and the heart continues to beat during the operation. This could reduce the risk of complications from the heart-lung machine.
