Cell encapsulation: promise and progress

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the current status of technology and challenges with respect to transplantation without using immunosuppressive drugs. Cell encapsulation, in which transplanted cells are encased in an artificial, semipermeable membrane, has benefits but needs to refine techniques for uniform capsule production, cell type selection, and regulatory issues.

Immunotherapy of tumors with xenogeneic endothelial cells as a vaccine

Article Abstract:

Research demonstrates that tumor immunotherapy can be accomplished using vaccine made up of fixed xenogeneic endothelial cells as shown by tumor growth protection, regression of existing tumors, and prolonging survival of the immunized mice. Results point out that this approach can be a new strategy for cancer therapy.

Not so fas: re-evaluating the mechanisms of immune privilege and tumor escape

Article Abstract:

The idea that the Fas ligand allows tumor cells to evade the immune system is not supported by scientific evidence. This means that Fas cannot be used to ensure that a transplanted organ is not rejected, as researchers originally hoped.
