Ex vivo effect of estrogen and progesterone compared with dexamethasone on cell-mediated immunity of HIV-infected and uninfected subjects

Article Abstract:

The effect of estrogen and progesterone concentrations achieved during hormonal contraceptive therapy is discussed. HIV infected subjects showed greater estrogen- and progesterone-mediated inhibition of TH1/inflamatory cytokines whereas the effect on proliferation and peripheral blood mononuclear cells phenotype did not differ by HIV status.

Role of micronutrients in HIV-infected intravenous drug users

Article Abstract:

Selenium deficiency appears to be the greatest risk factor for death among HIV-infected intravenous drug users. In a long-term follow up of 122 HIV-infected intravenous drug users, only 7% developed a selenium deficiency but this group had 20 times the mortality rate compared to the others.

Mortality of HIV-positive and HIV-negative heroin abusers as a function of duration of injecting drug use

Article Abstract:

Intravenous drug addicts with HIV infection die sooner than HIV-negative drug addicts. In a study of 376 intravenous drug addicts, HIV infection lowered survival time by 22%.
