Cellular energy sensor balances the scales

Article Abstract:

A study suggests that treatment with alpha-lipoic acid decreases food intake in rats and keeps them slim by inhibiting AMP activated protein kinase (AMPK) in the hypothalamus. The findings also reinforce the emerging stages of AMPK as a cellular integrator that senses signals for food intake and whole body energy status.

Beyond beta blockers

Article Abstract:

A new approach to treat heart failure inhibition of calcium-calmodulin dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) is investigated. Selective CaMKII inhibition may have benefit in combating both depressed cardiac contractility and arrythmogenesis in heart failure while preserving sympathetic responsiveness of the heart.

Initiation of neuropathic pain requires lysophosphatidic acid receptor signaling

Article Abstract:

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a bioactive lipid with activity in the nervous system and the role of LPA signaling in the development of neuropathic pain is examined. The results imply that receptor-mediated LPA signaling is crucial in the initiation of neuropathic pain.
