Cellular immune responses to HTLV-I: immunopathogenic role in HTLV-I-associated neurologic disease

Article Abstract:

Many of the diseases associated with the human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) could be explained by an immune response against viral antigens expressed in many different tissues. HTLV-I has been associated with a type of leukemia, a muscle disease, arthritis and certain autoimmune diseases. Researchers have found large numbers of CD8 T cells in the spinal cords of people with the most well-known HTLV-I disease, tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-I-associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM). These T cells could attack the tissue infected with the virus or release inflammatory chemicals.

CD80 expression on monocytes in HIV-infected patients

Article Abstract:

The CD80 co-stimulatory molecule does not appear to contribute to the immune dysfunction of HIV infection. Researchers compared monocytes from HIV patients and healthy volunteers, and describe differences in CD80 expression and T-cell activity.
