Changes of plasma calcitonin gene-related peptide levels in postmenopausal women

Article Abstract:

Levels of a hormone important to heart function called calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) appear to drop in post-menopausal women. Hormone-replacement therapy appears to reverse this effect. Researchers compared CGRP levels in 15 post-menopausal and 11 fertile women at rest, 12 post-menopausal women during hot flashes, and 8 post-menopausal and 10 fertile women after quickly moving to a sitting position. Post-menopausal women had lower CGRP levels than those of reproductive age. After abruptly sitting up, CGRP levels in post-menopausal women did not change. However, CGRP levels rose after hormone replacement therapy.

Expression of cyclooxygenases in ductus arteriosus of fetal and newborn pigs

Article Abstract:

Drugs that block the enzyme cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) may have fewer adverse effects on the newborn infant than drugs that block cyclooxygenase 1 (COX-1). These drugs are often used in pregnant women at delivery for various reasons. Researchers analyzed the levels of COX-1 and COX-2 in the ductus arteriosus of fetal and newborn pigs. The ductus arteriosus connects the pulmonary artery to the aorta because the fetus does not use its lungs. Although the newborn pig had both COX-1 and COX-2, inhibiting COX-2 had no adverse effect, but inhibiting COX-1 caused constriction of the ductus arteriosus.

Analysis of microarray experiments of gene expression profiling

Article Abstract:

The different types of studies that can be conducted by microarray experiments, such as class comparison, class prediction and class discovery, are described. Potential pitfalls in the interpretation of microarray experiments, as well as the strengths and limitations of this technology are highlighted in order to assist clinicians in appraising the quality of the scientific evidence reported in the obstetric and gynecologic literature.
