Canopy Computing: Using the Web in Clinical Practice

Article Abstract:

The World Wide Web could organize all types of medical information into a single, seamless information source. Even though a forest is a collection of individual trees, the canopy is a seamless web. So must electronic medical information be, and the electronic patient record may be the best organizing element. The language that codes pages so they can be read on a Web browser is called HTML. HTML can link various diverse records, including the results of lab tests, X-rays and even video displays of an echocardiogram. A new coding language called XML could provide even greater benefits.

NIH support for basic and clinical research

Article Abstract:

The budget of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a matter of great discussion among the research faculty. NIH budgets were doubled between 1998-2003 but researchers feel threatened with a cut in budget expected and they blame the NIH director for it, as he has developed several new research programs, including clinical research, however, this criticism is not justified as basic and clinical research are important for the growth of NIH.
