Clinical pathway implementation in the acute care hospital setting

Article Abstract:

Nineteen acute-care hospitals that have implemented patient care pathways to improve care quality and cost-effectiveness were surveyed on how they gauge pathway results. The legal ramifications of documentation policies, identification of effective measurement tools and patient outcomes, and discovery and treatment of variant results are problematic areas for the institutions. Streamlining documentation, identifying key measurement points within the pathway, measuring outcomes incrementally and studying both individual and aggregate variances would help resolve these problems.

Quality forum

Article Abstract:

The quality improvement program of the Tampa General Healthcare system in Florida is based on training in the quality leadership process that is given to all employees. Employee recognition is a key element that was tied in with the celebration of National Quality Week. The concept of employee appreciation was expanded to include appreciation of physicians and patients. The National Quality Week activities included presentations to the hospital leadership, a contest for 'best storyboard,' greeting of physicians, employee recognition activities, and roses for the patients.

Variance analysis for care path outcomes management

Article Abstract:

Tracking and analyzing departures from the diagnosis-specific care path can increase the caliber of patient care and decrease patient and health care organization costs. Variances that have been graded on a scale are easiest to analyze, allowing organizations to see the points at which the care path works well and needs improvement. The care path designates the sequence of events that must occur for a patient's treatment to have a positive result.
