Article Abstract:

The spread of virulent strains of micro-organisms is raising international concern. Evolutionary theory explains how the increase has occurred and indicates solutions to the problem. Pathogenic microorganisms must spread to new patients, at least as quickly as the infected recover or die, to survive and reproduce. Hospitalization can aid this process as there are more people involved and more opportunities for spread of the organism if hospital staff do not observe good hygiene practices. The use of antibiotics also helps as it promotes the survival of resistant strains of the organism.

A common ailment

Article Abstract:

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is extremely common in very young children, and is only really dangerous to those who have some other health problem, such as chronic lung disease or immunodeficiency. RSV is a member of the Paramyxoviridae family of viruses, and exists in subgroups A and B. It is a lipid-enveloped virus, and is therefore sensitive to lipid solvents and acid environments and is labile at body temperature. Infection usually takes place through the conjunctival or nasal epithelia and results from random collisions between viruses and target cells.

Clinical view

Article Abstract:

The death of a male patient on a nursing ward was the first contact for a young nursing student on his first placement in hospital. The situation was very upsetting for the young nurse but the ward sister helped him overcome his fear by making the young nurse face his emotions in a practical way. The young nurse was asked to help prepare the dead man for his relatives to see, which the young man found to be a very private but rewarding experience.
