Combining talents

Article Abstract:

Efficiently combining the skills of various nurses can improve care quality. However, many health agencies are using a scheme whereby several nursing care assistants (NCHs) are supervised by one qualified nurse. While this will reduce costs, it is skill dilution rather than skill mix. Health agencies do not have to provide a balanced ratio of unqualified and qualified staff, which could result in qualified nurses being unable to practice their own nursing skills, because they have to assume responsibility for a number of health care assistants.

Too many tests?

Article Abstract:

The demand for diagnostic testing is increasing, and in some cases is unnecessary. Laboratories account for 3% of hospital and community services budgets and 23,000 employees. A number of schemes have been put forward to reduce the number of tests, but so far no one effective method has emerged. Nurses have a vital role to play since they are in a position to make sure any procedures adopted are adhered to, that doctors take note of any tests requested and that the number of requests for tests does not become excessive.

Resignations and redundancies at Welsh trust in management crisis

Article Abstract:

Plans by Morriston NHS Trust in Swansea, Wales, to make 16 clinical staff redundant have prompted the resignation of consultants, followed by the resignation of Peter Allen, the chairman of the trust, and four of its five non-executive directors. Senior doctors are refusing to return to management duties, even though the trust has withdrawn the redundancy notices while further discussions are held about improving its financial position.
