Nursesare increasingly expanding their roles in A&E, particularly in the case of nurse practitioners whocan be used to bypass the doctor totally. The National Audit Office accepts that nursepractitioners could reduce A&E waiting times and help to reduce the pressure on junior doctors.There is no clear definition of the role of a nurse, but nurses must consider the legal implicationsand professional issues of their expanded roles, so that they are working within the Scope ofProfessional Practice.

The role of the asthma nurse includes taking a full history of the condition, monitoring peak-flow readings, confirming diagnosis, preparing a treatment plan, demonstrating and checking inhaler technique. The nurse should also be involved in counselling patients on self-management and offering advice. Details of the various types of devices available for giving asthma medication are included.
