Article Abstract:

Self-advocacy groups are being formed by disabled people aiming to promote their own needs and ideas and to confront the community's prejudices against them. The inequalities of the current care system, which views disabled people as unable to act for themselves, can only be redressed by the disabled 's empowerment and advocacy. Those in charge in welfare and health organisations have generally sought to serve their own interests, with the disabled's empowerment perceived as a threat. The disabled are seeking positive expression and have labelled themselves people with learning disabilities as opposed to 'mentally handicapped.' Disabled people must learn to make realistic choices and effectively represent their opinions.

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Central Council (UKCC) should consider the low turnout of 13% to vote for representatives to the UKCC. The number of candidates on the 1997 ballot paper was 133. The introduction of regional constituencies would reduce this total to a figure which would be manageable for the voter. It would also give the candidates more opportunity to meet the electorate and increase the accountability of elected representatives

Social needs of people with mild learning disabilities

Article Abstract:

People with mild learning difficulties still have special needs which must be met through community care. One such person, Susie Flynn, is shy and finds it hard to make friends. Her health needs are related to her social and emotional needs. Flynn needs to improve both her interpersonal skills and assertiveness, and to gain greater independence.
