Commercial sex work and STD: the need for policy interventions to change societal patterns

Article Abstract:

The focus of public health concerns regarding sex workers has generally been along the line of respecting individual rights and directing efforts toward safe sexual practices to prevent disease transmission. Perhaps some focus on the community's health rights are necessary. the barrier to effective implementation of any sort of social behavioral health program is the lack of a clear social analysis. A balance of both health and human rights considerations is needed to create meaningful action.

Social and behavioral correlates of pelvic inflammatory disease

Article Abstract:

Screening for chlamydia infection and treating the infection promptly could substantially reduce the incidence of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women. PID is a bacterial infection of the uterus and fallopian tubes and is usually a complication of chlamydia infection or gonorrhea. Analysis of social and behavioral factors linked to PID reveals that recurrent chlamydial infection and delays in diagnosis and treatment of chlamydia are the most important risk factors for PID.
