Article Abstract:
Treatment of leg ulcers in community clinics is cost-effective and has advantages for patients and nurses. Local clinics have physical and psychological advantages over other treatment options. They provide treatment by familiar practitioners. They encourage independence and social interaction. Travelling and waiting times are reduced. Clinics may also be resource centres for nurses encouraging the application of research theory. However, fundamental knowledge of wound care management is essential in the establishment of clinics.

Vacuum-assisted closure
Article Abstract:
Vacuum-assisted closure applies a subatmospheric pressure to the bed of a wound through an open-cell polyurethane foam dressing. The foam fills the wound, and is linked to a canister located on the side of the vacuum pump unit. This approach removes excess exudate and encourages a moist wound-healing environment.

A description is presented of the technique which should be used for the management of soft tissue injuries with ultrasound therapy. The benefits of ultrasound in encouraging the healing of wounds is discussed.
