Companies 'escaping criminal sanctions' says Centre for Corporate Accountability

Article Abstract:

THe UK Health and Safety Executive has been accused of allowing company directors to avoid prosecution after serious injury or death has occurred in the workplace, leading to a culture of inactivity and danger. The accusations were made by the Centre for Corporate Accountability which claimed companies were fined an average 20,000 pounds sterling where a death had occurred, while only 10% of all serious injuries were ever investigated.

Call centre research

Article Abstract:

Research is to be carried out into the health and safety aspects of working in a call centre after new figures show up to 1.7% of the UK population are employed by the industry. Researchers will query workers over working conditions, stress levels and medical symptoms associated with muscle or joint disorders. A national set of guidelines will be produced to ensure the health and safety of those working in the call centre industry.

Firms flout law in degreasing ops

Article Abstract:

A UK survey of 170 sites by the HSE has revealed that many engineering firms are failing to protect their employees in vapour degreasing plants. They are in breach of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations by not protecting workers from harmful chemicals. HSE inspectors had to serve 18 improvement notices and 10 prohibition notices to some engineering firms.
