Compensation at a premium

Article Abstract:

The case of Page v Sheerness Steel Co Ltd will have significant repercussions for the calculation of damages for future loss. The House of Lords ruled that investment in Index Linked Government Securities is the best way to calculate the current value of the loss which the plaintiff will suffer in real terms, and therefore supported the rate of 3% to calculate future losses. This ruling will lead to plaintiffs receiving more damages. There will therefore be a reduced danger that their money will run out in the future. It seems very likely that insurance premiums will rise in response to this case.

Sarp fined 120,000 pounds sterling over acid leaks

Article Abstract:

A lack of research and inadequate preparation led to two separate spillages of acid by waste recycling firm Sarp UK. The firm was eventually charged 150,000 pounds sterling in costs and 120,000 pounds sterling in fines by a court which stressed the need for waste recycling firms to be more aware of the dangers surrounding the toxic materials they handle on a daily basis. Sarp UK claimed it had unintentionally spilled the mixture of sulphuric and nitric acid, with the situation being handled quickly and effectively.

13 year battle for 600,000 pounds sterling slip injuries compensation

Article Abstract:

UK businesses are being urged to review procedures regarding the safety of employers and prevention of slip-related accidents after a court ruling rewarded a slip victim 600,000 pounds sterling 13 years after her initial accident. The victim was supported by labour union UNISON, after having to have her leg amputated as a direct result of two preventable falls. The case should make businesses take a more considered approach to safety on their premises, according to slip expert Roger Haslam.
