Meningitis; the facts

Article Abstract:

Most cases of meningitis occur in the winter. Meningococcal bacteria are found in the nose and throat of about 10% of people and they can cause both meningitis or septicaemia. Carriers do not often get the disease. The fatality rate of meningococcal meningitis is between 2-4% but it is 20% for meningococcal septicaemia. A red rash appears with septicaemia. The bacteria are spread by coughing, kissing or sneezing. The symptoms in babies include fever, vomiting, crying, blank expression and floppiness. Children and adults may have a severe headache, a stiff neck and vomiting.

Knowing the facts

Article Abstract:

Information is necessary to reassure women with benign breast conditions. Research has shown that women with benign conditions may suffer greater anxiety than cancer-diagnosed women. About one in 12 women develop breast cancer in the United Kingdom although most breast clinics referrals prove benign. Patients may present symptons including mastalgia, nipple discharge, lumps, lesions or abscesses. Investigation may necessitate simple reassurance or surgery.

Dieting fads: the facts

Article Abstract:

Weight loss should be achieved by eating healthy regular meals and taking physical exercise. It is preferable not to restrict particularly enjoyable foods, as some consumption of favourite foods can assist in greater long term success. Reducing fat consumption and increasing carbohydrate consumption should result in greater success than cutting calories drastically.
