Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Children: Primary Care and Public Health Considerations

Article Abstract:

The causes, diagnosis, complications, prevention, and treatment of type 2 diabetes in children are reviewed. Type 2 diabetes was formerly called adult-onset diabetes, but it now accounts for half of all diabetes cases in children. The increase in childhood obesity may be one reason.

Compensation for energy intake from fast food among overweight and lean adolescents

Article Abstract:

The study was investigated to evaluate the effects of fast food on energy intake in overweight vs. lean adolescents. The study concluded that overweight adolescents were less physically active than their lean counterparts and had higher total energy expenditure.

Effects of low-glycemic load vs low-fat diet in obese young adults: A Rand

Article Abstract:

A trial of obese young adults between 18-35 years was carried out to determine whether insulin secretion affects body fat loss among obese individuals consuming self-prepared diets. Regardless of insulin secretion, a low-glycemic load diet has beneficial effects on high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations but not on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration.
