Compression bandaging

Article Abstract:

Advice on the four-layer, short-stretch and three-layer procedures for compression bandaging is presented. The four-layer method begins with a layer of orthopaedic wool, followed by crepe, an elastic conformable compression bandage and a cohesive elastic compression bandage.

Advice on the application of the third layer of the three-layer process for compression bandaging is presented. The third layer is made up of an elasticated tubular bandage which gives additional compression and durability.

Compression bandaging plays a key role in the management of venous leg ulcers. It is essential that the bandaging applies sufficient, but not excessive, pressure and that nurses have proper training in this procedure.
