A new take on old problems

Article Abstract:

Improving the nursing care of elderly people involves addressing two central problems. Nurses are younger than their patient group and they have no personal experience of what it means to be old. There is also a tendency to treat old people as a homogenous group, but the age range alone creates significant differences. Campaigns which are addressing the issue of old age include the United Nation's International Year of Older People, which is aiming to give younger people a better understanding of old age, and Help the Aged's Dignity on the Ward campaign.

Monitoring diabetes

Article Abstract:

The high levels of diabetes suffered by older people in nursing home facilities makes it imperative for units to develop a proactive diabetes management strategy which encourages nurses to take a positive approach to providing care. Regular monitoring and testing of urine and blood samples gives early indications of complications, while encouraging patients to take a more healthy approach to life will also reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes.
