Conducting unit-based research to improve quality of care

Article Abstract:

To find out how a tertiary care medical center without a primary academic nursing affiliation would improve quality of patient care by conducting unit-based nursing research, a review was made of the evolution of unit-based nursing research at Northwestern Memorial Hospital over three years. Then an analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (a SWOT analysis) was made. Then strategies to build on the strengths and opportunities and to keep weaknesses and threats from having impact were developed.

Quality plan for a product line

Article Abstract:

At the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, one product line is mental health/psychiatric services for veterans. The organization has set up a quality plan based on Juran's trilogy, that is, quality planning, quality control and quality improvement. Indicators were in the areas of risk management, quality control and continuous quality improvement. Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) in healthcare has been greatly changed, becoming unit-based and based on product lines, instead of centralized.
