Consider the cost of disunity among doctors

Article Abstract:

Physicians and their organizations should unite to exert the greatest possible influence on health care reform legislation, or minor differences may be exaggerated by the mass media. For instance, the American Medical Society issued a well-considered press release on its strategy, which the American College of Physicians attacked as insufficient and insulting. These divisive tactics detract from the credibility of physicians, who are perceived as caring only for their own incomes.

Support PACs that give medicine a political voice

Article Abstract:

Physicians need to support political action committees (PAC) that represent the interests of the medical community if they want the collective political voice of their profession to be heard. While many physicians belong to national or state physicians' organizations, typically less than 10% belong to the PACs which are affiliated with these groups. Physicians should support their PAC affiliates if only because they have become an integral part of the political process.

The real issue is not access to care, but cost

Article Abstract:

Healthcare costs, not access, are the real spurs behind the movement to reform the health care system. Physicians need to learn about cost containment in order to formulate a workable new health plan to promote to legislators. The American Medical Association's 'Health Access America' plan does not address cost containment as a national priority, and if physicians ignore this issue, cost decisions will be made for them by legislators who know little about medicine.
