Contracts with Medicare patients blasted

Article Abstract:

The federal government will, through the Healthcare Financing Administration, try to eliminate the use of private contracts between physicians and Medicare patients. Such contracts are believed to create a Medicare system that consists of two levels, with the higher of the two levels paying more for the medical services they receive and lower tier patients facing limited healthcare access. However, supporters of private contracting do not like mandated discounting, which is what occurs when physicians treat Medicare patients.

More doctors sign up to participate in Medicare

Article Abstract:

Physician participation in Medicare is increasing, and totaled almost 60% in 1993. Montana had the largest increase, at 31 points; while anesthesiologists were the specialty with the largest increase. Officials in states with large increases attributed the change to factors such as Resource-Based Relative Value Scale charge limits. They also mentioned better improved relations with Medicare carriers, depressed state economies and the spector of health care reform.

Medicare private contracting still in flux

Article Abstract:

Physicians may be permitted private contracts for the care of Medicare beneficiaries under a law proposed by Sen Jon Tyl and sponsored by the American Medical Assn. Rep Bill Archer introduced a similar measure in the House of Representatives. Republican legislators favor prompt passage because of expected controversy over Medicare by Democrats in the 1998 congressional elections.
