Coping under the spotlight

Article Abstract:

Nursing professionals in the UK may have to tackle problems arising from disasters that are given publicity, such as a machete attack in a UK school in Wolverhampton, England. Those working for the media had to be banned from the area, and a photographer sought to enter the children's ward. There was secrecy over the location of a nursery nurse who had sought to protect the children since the attacker was still at large. The impact of the event was not always felt immediately by the nurses, some of whom suffered from delayed reactions.

On a role

Article Abstract:

Research in the United Kingdom (UK) into the role of the nurse anesthetist has concluded that a nurse has the ability, if fully trained, to act as an independent practitioner. Prior to surgery in the UK all patients are examined by an anesthetist yet in the USA nurse anesthetists are permitted to administer 65% of anesthetics. Fully trained anesthetic nurses in the UK would be able to reduce doctors' workload and provide a high quality of care although they face opposition from some professional authorities.

Promoting self-esteem after laryngectomy

Article Abstract:

Laryngectomy is performed in cases of cancer of the larynx and patients are left disfigured an unable to use their voices. This can lead to depression. Patients can improve their self-esteem and overcome depression with help from nurses. Loss of voice may involve stigma as well as communication problems, and speech rehabilitation can be used. The stoma can be covered by a scarf in order for patients to socialize with more confidence. Friends can also help patients improve their confidence.
