Corneal surgery for myopia

Article Abstract:

The effectiveness and side common side effects of corneal surgery for the correction of vision, especially nearsightedness vary. Radial keratotomy is the most common and best established surgical technique for the correction of nearsightedness in patients with mild to moderate cases. Other surgical techniques are photorefractive keratectomy using excimer lasers; keratomileusis, or cornea carving; and synthetic intracorneal ring implantations. Keratomileusis and synthetic intracorneal ring implanting appear to be more effective than radial keratotomy and photorefractive keratectomy for severe nearsightedness. Corrective ability and adverse effects of each technique are discussed.

Corneal surgery for correction of refractive errors

Article Abstract:

LASIK appears to be the most effective of the different corneal surgeries for treating nearsightedness and farsightedness. The surgeon makes a small flap in the cornea, uses a laser to remove corneal tissue under the flap, then replaces the flap without stitches. Photorefractive keratectomy also uses a laser but the surgeon does not create a flap. Radial keratotomy involves making incisions in the cornea to make the center flatter. These techniques have side effects and not all patients benefit.

A far-sighted view of myopia

Article Abstract:

Amacrine cells in the human retina can distinguish between myopic and hyperopic defocus. Myopic defocus causes increased expression of the ZENK gene, whereas hyperopic defocus inhibits ZENK expression.
