Article Abstract:

The psychological aspects of isolation nursing should not be considered the same for source isolation and protective isolation, as patients are placed in source isolation to protect others from contamination which may make the patient feel distressed and aggressive. Protective isolation is used when a patient requires protection from harmful infectious agents, and the treatment is usually carried out with full co-operation from the patient and family. Nursing staff should help to make barrier nursing practises as pleasant as possible, reducing stress and increasing the chance of a positive outcome.

White-knuckle ride to theatre

Article Abstract:

Providing information to patients undergoing surgery can lessen anxiety and allow a forum for questions. The chance to make a pre-operative visit to surgery unit has been found to help reduce stress but strict theatre lists and a lack of staff means this route is not the norm for patients. Nurses should be able to recognize symptoms of anxiety in a patient. The use of a series of questions designed to measure levels of anxiety have been found to be useful in detecting those patients who need extra reassurance and psychological support.
