Cultural literacy of medical students

Article Abstract:

Research in cultural literacy among the 1st and 2nd year medical students of Wake Forest University Medical Center determined the marked deficiency of knowledge in humanities and social sciences among these groups. Some students do not even have adequate knowledge in biological sciences as evidenced by the number of incorrect and inadequate answers to such items. These findings support E. D. Hirsch's program which showed the importance of humanities education and cultural literacy in medical practice to be able to address the needs of a diverse public.

The faiths of two doctors: Thomas Browne and William Osler

Article Abstract:

William Osler served as professor of medicine at various universities such as the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins Medical School from 1875 to 1919. He has influenced medical education, wrote one of the most useful medical textbooks yet never failed to impress his patients and colleagues with his compassion and empathy. Osler admits that he was largely influenced by the philosophy of Sir Thomas Browne and his work 'Religion Medici' or 'A Doctor's Faith.' Browne espoused that science must never lose touch with spirituality.

Altruism, professional decorum, and greed: perspectives on physician compensation

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the attitude of physicians toward earning money and wealth determines the performance of the physicians. The fees of the physician and the treatment for a patient have been controversial in many cases. This fact is illustrated in several literary works such as Shaw's 'The Doctor's Dilemma' and A.J. Cronins 'The Citadel.' The new reforms being implemented in the US may change this type of attitude of physicians who extract large amount of money from the patient.
