Cytokine and prostaglandin production by amnion cells in response to the addition of different bacteria

Article Abstract:

Some bacteria apparently cause amnion cells to produce inflammatory chemicals that could lead to premature labor. The amnion is the membrane that surrounds the fetus and is usually filled with amniotic fluid. Researchers took samples of amnion and exposed them to bacteria, including E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The samples produced interleukin-6 and interleukin-8 when exposed to E. coli and a bacterium called Bacteroides fragilis but not when exposed to Staphylococcus aureus. Interleukins may initiate premature labor.

Increased intrauterine frequency of Ureaplasma urealyticum in women with preterm labour and preterm premature rupture of the membranes and subsequent cesarean delivery

Article Abstract:

Studies were conducted to evaluate the prevalence of microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity at preterm cesarean delivery. Results showed that there was an association between intrauterine colonization with Ureaplasma urealyticum in therapy resistant preterm labour and preterm premature rupture of membranes.
